Subtitled "The Helsinki Concert," YOU CAN'T DO THAT ONSTAGE ANYMORE VOL. 2 was recorded in Finland in '74. It's the same band as heard on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE, which was released a couple weeks prior to this concert. However, with another year of roadwork under their collective belt, the band's turn-on-a-dime quotient is cranked up quite a bit. Hearing the differences in the five songs which are found on both releases offers a telling glimpse into the growth of this crack sextet. Their familiarity with the material allowed them to internalize the complex blueprints and really flourish as ensemble players. As they shift effortlessly from dense thirty-second note call and response games to orchestral landscapes, it's possible to forget that there are only six musicians running the train. Among Zappa's audience, this band rightly remains one of the most cherished of his post-Mothers ensembles. This two-hour set allows one the luxury of hear the true shape of one performance.
